Aaron Douglas at the Frist

I went to the Frist Art Museum today. They had two great shows. From Monet to Dali and Aaron Douglas African American Modernist. I was floored by Aaron Douglas. What a storyteller. His watercolors and gouache studies were something else.

Carolina Sparkle (oil 5x7)

This oil is from my watercolor sketch I did last fall in North Carolina. Looks like it's a workshop or shed. The clouds cleared and these whites made a nice sparkle. Every time I see the Carolina mountains I remember my grandparents who lived on a mountain that overlooked Valdese NC. I had fun there.

Fly General Store (oil 10x20) *SOLD*

This is the Fly General Store in Fly Tennessee on a chilly Tennessee winter Sunday. Those two dogs were mighty friendly. It was a bit overcast when took a picture of the painting so it's a little washed out. I tweaked it the best I could in Photoshop.

Fly Shed (acrylic on panel 8x10) *SOLD*

This building is in Fly Tennessee. I like that afternoon winter light shining on the junky old building. There is the Fly General Store there that I am painting now in oil that is interesting. Should be finished and posted soon.

Franklin Grain Elevator (acrylic 8x10) *SOLD*

Late afternoon in Franklin Tennessee. I really wanted to push my colors on this Franklin landmark. I was influenced by Bruce Docker's work here. Click the link on my Blogroll and check out his work.
I am surprised this grain elevator is still standing in upscale Franklin. I don't believe it has been used in 30+ years. I did some sketches of it over 20 years ago and it was vacant then. Some fancy-smancy condos are going up across the street.
