Florida Vacation Sketches

D, Kitty and I headed south last week to St. Augstine FL for some R&R and to visit my folks. The temperatures were lower than Nashville's 100+ but the humidity made up the difference. The ocean water felt mighty good and I caught a few waves. Some St. Augustine galleries featured some mighty fine local artists who really capture the spirit of the North Florida scenes. Here are a few of my watercolor sketches.

Old Historic Nashville Cemetery (gouache 9x7.5) SOLD

Here is the gouache I did from my pencil sketch down a few posts. This place is spooky at night I bet.

Auburntown (8/10 oil)

I painted this from my watercolor sketch down the page. 100 degrees outside and cool in my studio. I tried using just cadmium scarlett, cadmium lemon and french ultramarine. I used a little alizarin crimson on the red roof.

Almost Home (watercolor 8.5x5) *SOLD*

It's hot and I was thinking of Fall when I painted this little borderless watercolor in my Cotman pad. I am ready for Fall around June. I don't like the heat unless I am next to a pool.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (oil 11/14) *SOLD*

This is the St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Franklin Tennessee. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is located in the heart of downtown Franklin. It was the first Episcopal Church established in Tennessee. St. Paul’s was founded in 1827.During the Civil War it was used for barracks by Union troops. Many of the pews were burned for fire wood. Following the Battle of Franklin (November 30th, 1864), St. Paul’s was used as a field hospital.

Old Historic Nashville Cemetery Sketch

Saturday morning I joined the The Nashville Plein Air Painters at the Old Historic Nashville Cemetery. I could only stay for a half hour or so because I had to go to work. Enough time for a pencil sketch and a memory soak. I got it redrawn on illustration board ready for some gouache. I would like to have seen what the rest of the gang painted but I had to go.

This is in Auburntown TN. Not much going on there these days but plenty of subject matter. My battery went kaput there and a nice lady and her daughter helped my get it jump started with their truck. I was not setting in the middle of the street, I just moved the road over. ;-) This is also from my Aquabee Deluxe Sketchbook.
